I am excited to share that today marks the completion of our transition away from Google Cloud
Here are the reasons why we have decided to become a self-hosted enterprise:
• Privacy: You no longer have to worry about your data being in the hands of Google
• Improved Response Times: Requests no longer have to bounce around data centers, resulting in faster response times
• Enhanced Hardware Performance: We now have four times the computing capacity compared to what we had on Google Cloud
• Cost Savings: Our new setup is 50 times cheaper each month. Although we had to invest in hardware initially, the savings will quickly offset this expense within a few months
• Internet Bandwidth: With FTTP (Fiber To The Premise, 1 gbps), we now enjoy the same high bandwidth on-premises as we did on Google Cloud
• Freedom: We are no longer reliant on Google's technology stack
While Google Cloud has served its purpose, a few months ago, I personally experienced their claim of being up '99.9%' of the time proven false. Their paid support is too costly, and the reliance on community support, such as Stack Overflow, has diminished with the rise of AI
Rest assured, we have implemented robust measures to ensure data backup at all times
Moving forward, here are the main tech-wise differences:
• Architecture: We have transitioned from a Microservices architecture to a Monolith architecture
• Database: Instead of GCP Data Store, we now utilize PostgreSQL
• Storage: GCP Buckets have been replaced with SSD storage
